Like the harfang hawk, our corporation has a vision from which we carve strategies. We have and will seize the opportunities. We’re pretty swift too. Québec City has 4-month winters with two meters of snow. So we’re patient by nature.
HARFANG {arfã}: French word (from Swedish)that means “snowy owl”. With its extraordinary vision, this beautiful white hawk is able to quickly trace and hunt a single white lemming over a 1 km range. Our instruments are like the harfang : able to trace far defects with high fidelity, and at the speed of ultrasound.
Genesis
HARFANG Microtechniques Inc. was founded as the continuity of the HARFANG research project, on the initiative of François Mainguy, founder and VP-Technology. This project started in 1999 at the École de Technologie Supérieure de Montréal (ÉTS) and was supported by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) from the beginning.
The idea of a hand-held phased array system for NDT came to Mr. Mainguy in1998, while he was studying signal processing and microelectronics at university. Later, as an ultrasound consultant for the Electric Power Research Institute, he convinced his client of the potential of a hand-held ultrasound phased array system for NDT. In 2002, after 3 years of research and development in close collaboration with EPRI and its members, HARFANG has introduced world’s first portable, battery-operated phased array instrument: the X-32.
Commercialization
In March 2003, venture capital was brought to fund the commercialization effort. Hydro-Québec CapiTech and Innovatech, two well-known Quebecer investors, decided to back-up the start-up business. Since the commercialization of the products manufactured by Harfang in 2003, we are exploring how technology and services can help clients address their nondestructive inspection problems and challenges in nuclear power generation, automotive components, welding, aerospace composite materials, windmill etc, and realize their possibilities, aspirations and dreams. Hundreds of products have been sold to countries worldwide directly or through our distribution channels. We apply new thinking and ideas to create more customized, valuable and trusted solution experiences with PA technology, continuously improving our products and services.
Seizing all opportunities
After being an idea, then a research project, then a start-up business, the next natural move was market expansion. HARFANG was sold to the Sonatest NDE Group in April 2005 for that very reason. Sonatest was founded in 1957 and is a well-known, greatly respected NDT company. With more than 80 distributors world-wide, HARFANG now has the potential of growing its business and developing great new products.
